My son Ellis passed away on the 12 February this year. Before his funeral was even arranged, a group of his best friends said they intended to honour him, cycling from John O’Groats to Land's End. Ellis worked for Sigma Sports in Oakham. He was a keen cyclist himself, hoping one day to take part in the transplant games.

What a great summer we have had here in Smeeton! It started off with ‘Brass on the Grass’, our annual band concert on the allotments. The Oddfellows Brass Band came in force again to entertain us with renditions of music and songs old and new. What a talented band they are! Even the clouds parted and the sun decided to come out to listen. Although this is a free event, the donations raised were for GEMS and came to £650.
As the country has moved progressively out of Lockdown we have more or less succeeded in reinstating our full programme of short, half day and all day walks and both existing and new members have been turning out with growing confidence. I personally recently sampled one of our Thursday morning walks; this was a shade less than 6 miles. The expectations that I had for this walk, from Ab Kettleby in this case, were all met including being well led by one of our many experienced walk leaders Paul. The bonus on this occasion was the prospect of sharing a well earnt lunch at the villages Sugar Loaf Inn with fellow walkers. A timely reminder that quite apart from the obvious health and fitness aspects that the sociability and camaraderie of Rambling remains intact! We continue to experience and indeed welcome newcomers to our ranks, many new faces have come across us via our Facebook page. Here you can find out a little more about us and find more detailed information about our walks programme.

It’s not been the finest month for Skipper Daz and his boys. But, it would be fair to say that luck hasn’t been on his side. The brightest spark was a monster victory over Lutterworth 3s with both Archie Brown (101*) and Samit Kanji (104) notching their first hundreds for the club. We’ve also seen some decent bowling performances from the pack too. But the rub of the green hasn’t been forthcoming; the promotion push has become something of a mid-table forced acceptance. There are still a few more matches to be played; so a positive finish is hoped for. This is especially as some of the younger 2s are being blooded into the mix. The future is bright boys, the future is bright.
