What an amazing four days we have had here in Smeeton Westerby, celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. It all started on the Thursday evening when we congregated at the allotments on Gumley Road. We enjoyed refreshments before marching along the road and up the hill to Bungalow Farm, owned by Penny and Pete Rivett. It was here that we lit our village bonfire beacon. As the flames soared into the sky, the sun started to set. It was magical to look out into the distance and see other beacons being lit too. It gave us all a wonderful feeling of togetherness for one purpose, to celebrate the reign of her Majesty.

My Grandma was a true Kibworthian, born in the flat above 40 Fleckney Road, a sweet shop at that time which belonged to her Aunty Sarah. She was christened Florence Joan but there were already three Florrie’s in the family. Great aunty, big aunty and little aunty. She became known as Joan, I suspect much to the relief of the other Florences!
