‘A voluntary community newspaper for the Kibworth area.’ The very first issue of the Chronicle in April 1978 bore those words underneath the mast head. For 42 years our aim has remained the same. Community and volunteers are what the Chronicle is all about.

Our beloved mother and grandmother, Betty Bateman, passed away on 17 April 2020 at the age of 94. Her funeral took place on Friday 24 April at Gedling Crematorium (Nottinghamshire) on a beautifully warm and sunny afternoon.

During ‘Lockdown’, Smeeton Westerby Village Hall, like all other halls, has had to close its doors to all its users. However, on a positive note, it has meant that with the building being empty for so long, we have been able to employ a decorator to come in and completely repaint the building both inside and out.

I am not sure how many of you are aware, but the Main Street Theatre Company of Great Glen started its life, (approximately 46 years ago!) as The Kibworth Drama Group based in the new drama studio of the then Kibworth High School. Recently on Facebook, Heather Wilson, one of our members, has been posting lots of old photos and programmes of shows that the group performed all those years ago. It has been fascinating to see them again and to relive so many great times.

Open Hands is a Leicester based charity, part of the Trinity Live Church located in Upper Tichborne Street, Highfields, (off London Road). Since the Covid-19 crisis was recognised as a pandemic and the effect, detrimentally affecting the welfare of many families, Open Hands, through contact with individuals and families, has a network to hand of the people in need of basic provisions. However, this only works through voluntary contributions.

Throughout lockdown Kibworth Rangers have met weekly on Zoom and continued to complete badges and challenges. We have had lots of fun and have enjoyed getting to see each other.

As many of you are aware, the Leicestershire Wildlife Hospital is a village based charity, now in its 36th year. It takes in around 5000 sick, injured or orphaned animal cases every year, with the aim of returning these back to the wild when fit and well.
