I am sure readers can not help but notice that our medium sized village (actually its two villages called Kibworth Harcourt and Kibworth Beauchamp) is expanding almost expeditiously with the building in recent times of Kibworth's new estates.

Like most societies, councils, community forums and groups of friends, The Kibworth & District Chronicle Management Committee has been holding its meetings online. Zoom, Google and Microsoft have really been helping with communication though most of us would really like to go back to face to face I suspect. Some of those meetings will have been to discuss finances and perhaps lack of funds for day to day running or future projects.

The final months of President Judy’s year have been “different” with meetings taking place on Zoom and a very active WhatsApp group. Hopefully keeping members in touch and smiling throughout the lockdown.

In the previous Nature Notes I wrote mainly about sound recording of night migrant birds. This time I am focussing on UK moth species, a group of insects often associated with nocturnal activity.

Since Lockdown began, the Rev. Alan Pyke has set himself the challenge of walking the distance from Lands End to John O’ Groats around Stuart Court – all 850 miles. So far, he is over the halfway mark and expects to reach John O’ Groats sometime in early September.

I would like to say a big thank you to two special people in our community who have definitely succeeded in making the new normal a pleasurable experience during these trying times.

The Rotary club heard of the Well’s predicament with the launch of their foodbank during the Covid-19 lockdown, in not having enough storage for frozen foodstuffs donated to the charity.

During ‘Lockdown’, Smeeton Westerby Village Hall, like all other halls, has had to close its doors to all its users. However, on a positive note, it has meant that with the building being empty for so long, we have been able to employ a decorator to come in and completely repaint the building both inside and out.

I am not sure how many of you are aware, but the Main Street Theatre Company of Great Glen started its life, (approximately 46 years ago!) as The Kibworth Drama Group based in the new drama studio of the then Kibworth High School. Recently on Facebook, Heather Wilson, one of our members, has been posting lots of old photos and programmes of shows that the group performed all those years ago. It has been fascinating to see them again and to relive so many great times.

Open Hands is a Leicester based charity, part of the Trinity Live Church located in Upper Tichborne Street, Highfields, (off London Road). Since the Covid-19 crisis was recognised as a pandemic and the effect, detrimentally affecting the welfare of many families, Open Hands, through contact with individuals and families, has a network to hand of the people in need of basic provisions. However, this only works through voluntary contributions.
