The Journey is the quarterly magazine of the Youth Hostel Association. Recently there was a short, potted history of Ordnance Survey (OS) mapping through the centuries. Readers might be interested to know that Ordnance Survey has been mapping Britain since 1791. Governments, businesses, the military and of course, outdoor pursuit enthusiasts, rely on the maps and data that is available from this august provider. Ordnance Survey’s origins lie in military strategy, with the Scottish Highlands first being mapped area after a rebellion in 1745. Later, as the French Revolution rumbled across the channel the government decided it should survey England’s exposed coasts. For this task, the Board of Ordnance was founded on 21st June 1791. However, it took a further decade for the first map to appear.

It is the time of year when miracles are at the top, or near top, of people’s minds. A miracle is something that happens, which as yet, cannot be explained in a convincing way. Over 100years ago people rushed into the streets when a plane flew over - the miracle of flight! There is a daily miracle close to home, on our doorstep; the men and women who choose to spend their lives working in the Health Services. Their lives are devoted to ensuring recuperation, the relief of pain and the return to full health of their fellow human beings. Further study is required throughout their careers, whatever speciality is chosen. Why do these men and women choose this demanding career? Many, not all, are from a home or school with religious values that motivate them to carry their beliefs into their work. Without their decision and subsequent contribution, our health service would be drastically short of much needed staff.

The Remembrance Day Service, led by Ludger Fremmer, from outside St Wilfrids Church on Sunday 14 was extremely well attended. Possibly up to a 1,000 people came together and lined the street.

Firstly, Kibworth Station would like to thank everyone who donated to our recent charity event challenge to climb to the summit of Mount Snowdon in fire kit. The current total is a huge £3718. The challenge was taken to raise money for local charity The Well, along with The Firefighters Charity both of which do amazing work.
