Two families were lucky to escape, without apparent injury, a near head on collision on Saturday 7 September. A Mini, heading west, collided with a Mercedes saloon heading east – on the wrong side of the road – with such force that it took 50 yards for the Mini to stop. A second car with a very young baby in it could not stop and hit the Mercedes; miraculously, the baby and Mother were unhurt. The driver of the Mini was driven away by Police.

The fifth carol in this year’s Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols was ‘A virgin most gentle’. The Festival was broadcast worldwide on BBC Radio 4 and the BBC World Service from the candlelit Chapel of Kings College, Cambridge on Christmas Eve. The carol is of particular local interest, having been composed by Andrew Carter, a past pupil of Kibworth Beauchamp Grammar School.

As this year draws to a close, we are all about to celebrate our Christmas a little differently, within the restrictions still in place as the pandemic continues. In common with many organisations around the country, our WI is unable to hold our much-loved Christmas party.

Usually at this time of year everyone is getting ready for Christmas celebrations. In Gumley that usually means a Nativity or Carol Service and a Christingle Service, in St Helen’s our beautiful church.
