The Kibworth Art Lovers Society held its annual exhibition on 3 and 4June, returning, for the first time since 2019, to the Kibworth Grammar School Hall. Over 200 visitors came to view more than 100 original paintings by our talented local artists and we were delighted with the public response. The vote for favourite work ‘ The Pantile’, Tunbridge Wells.

Canal Cuttings - June 2023

The boating season is well under way now. Numbers are still down on past years, when 40 through the locks on a high-season day was not unusual. New boats are still flooding into the system, many of them wide-beam (over 7ft). Although spacious for living on, they can cause problems on our rapidly narrowing canal, vegetation is encroaching on all sides. Meeting one with passenger boat Vagabond (10ft 6”) can be quite interesting.

Gartree Super-Prison

We still await the decision of the Secretary of State for Levelling up, Housing and Communities, Michael Gove, on the appeal by the Ministry of Justice against the refusal of planning permission by Harborough District Council for building of a 1700 inmate prison on the greenfield site at Gartree.

Kibworth Grammar School Hall - June 2023

Kibworth Grammar School Hall Trustees held their monthly meeting on 17 May with our main focus on fund raising ideas to meet the ever increasing costs of running the hall. Although the hall has regular bookings and plenty of children’s parties, we are approaching the summer holidays and the annual slowdown of usage. Our brainstorm included a musical Film Night with attendees theme-dressed or maybe an afternoon Tea Dance with delicious homemade cakes.

Nature Note - June '23

Odonata are the ‘tooth-jawed’ insects, a group which includes Damselflies and Dragonflies. Late May to early October are the best months to look for these insects which are often stunningly beautiful when seen close-up but ferocious, as the name ‘dragonfly’ suggests, if you are a smaller insect.

County Councillor for Gartree - June 2023

This diagram shows the major responsibilities for our three levels of local authorities/councils. There are some anomalies to further complicate the picture. For example, the county is responsible for mending roads and pavements, but the district is responsible for cleaning them. In Kibworth Beauchamp, the parish street warden keeps the main shopping area clear of litter.
