Summer News from Smeeton! With the Chronicle having a well deserved break for July and August, I must offer some dates for your diaries. As you may have realised, we here in Smeeton are always looking for events to bring our village together. We are also delighted to invite those of you from neighbouring villages too.

To mark a new beginning of hope and freedom, the award winning Wistow Maze has been designed in the shape of a Phoenix rising from the flames.

Early last year, when Covid-19 struck, Leicestershire & Rutland Federation of Women’s Institutes had to cancel the ever popular Annual Council Meeting just one week beforehand and the WI, like everyone else, faced a challenging year. Many of us have kept in touch through phone calls, texts and FaceTime, keeping spirits up and supporting each other. We have also learned to ‘Zoom’ and were delighted to learn that the ACM would be held this year, via Zoom, on Saturday 6 March, albeit with a reduced programme. 

Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland in partnership with Unique Wine Safaris is holding an online Charity Wine Tasting Night and you are invited.

My name is Jane Rayner a local girl from Kibworth. I’m currently starring in the reality TV series, the Real Housewives of Jersey.

With the world upside down we have decided to share one of the pantomimes via You Tube to watch...for FREE! The show is Dick Whittington which we performed in 2011. It was directed and produced by Mary Orton, assisted by Michael Rawnsley.

The fifth carol in this year’s Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols was ‘A virgin most gentle’. The Festival was broadcast worldwide on BBC Radio 4 and the BBC World Service from the candlelit Chapel of Kings College, Cambridge on Christmas Eve. The carol is of particular local interest, having been composed by Andrew Carter, a past pupil of Kibworth Beauchamp Grammar School.

Kibworth and District U3A will hold its annual Christmas party but, wait for, on Zoom.

Usually at this time of year everyone is getting ready for Christmas celebrations. In Gumley that usually means a Nativity or Carol Service and a Christingle Service, in St Helen’s our beautiful church.

The Grammar School Hall re-opened for business on 1 September.

Cheered on by the excellent response we had to our open afternoon in August, we are pleased to announce that our Apple Event will run on Thursday 8 October from 1.45 - 4pm and Friday 9 October from 11am - 3.45pm.
