Our 2019 programme began with a talk and demonstration by local artist Sarah Luke on Fused Glass work. Sarah has always had an interest in creative, artistic work which began with taking art at school and was followed up by studying at Charles Keene College (now Leicester College). However, her early career as a photographer’s studio assistant - which took her all around the country setting up photo shoots - was cut short when her employer’s business folded; as a matter of expediency Sarah went to work in a betting shop. Family life followed, and her artistic endeavours were put on hold, although she still retained an interest in creative arts. Roger and Danièle Bradley described their lives with photography at the November meeting. They have practised photography for many years, and their work has been influenced by early pioneers such as Sir John Herschel (1842) and Anna Atkins (1843). Roger’s family moved to Canada in his early childhood, where he was given his first camera as a reward for finishing his paper round; on his return to England he taught photography. Recurring themes in his work are transport such as shipping and railways. Danièle’s first camera came from her father, and she has featured landscapes and her family many times.

A huge crowd of 1,500 filled the field opposite the top of New Road, Kibworth. Yet again they witnessed a spectacular firework display from Hi5 Fireworks. “Better than last year” I heard many say. The money raised, approximately £3,000, will go to Scouts, Guides and Youth Groups locally.
