If, like me, your tree knowledge is sketchy, winter is a good time to identify a few species. Away from parks and gardens, native species make up a high proportion of the trees that you might find. Some of the commoner species are described below.

Following on from the enormous success of D-Day 80 – 6 June 2024, in which we all commemorated the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy, France, through the lighting of over one thousand beacons and five hundred lamp lights of peace throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK overseas territories that night, we are now focusing all our efforts on the celebration of the 80th Anniversary of VE Day which marked the end of the war in Europe and WWII as a whole on 8th May 1945, in a similar way.

This month, we’re meeting Richie, an experienced member of the Kibworth crew. After four years as an on-call firefighter and another two in a fulltime role, Rich is now a competent firefighter, qualified driver, and also capable of ‘acting up’ at incidents. This means that he can take charge at an incident if no other officers are available. With a diverse skill set and a positive attitude, Rich is a key member of the Kibworth crew. Anyone listening to BBC Radio 4 on New Year’s Day would have been treated to a day of pure poetry. The ‘national treasure’ that is The Shipping Forecast or programme about The Shipping Forecast. The days’ programmes celebrated that it had been broadcast by the BBC for exactly 100 years.

On Sunday 15 December, members of Kilby village enjoyed a Christmas drink and some amazing food, at the home of Anne and John Emery, as a ‘thank you’ for all the support we have had during 2024. As a special treat, we heard ‘Jingle Bells’ and ‘Good King Wenceslas’ played on the piano by eight year old Ahaan Mittal, a sterling performance!
