Illston on the Hill WI invited Yuki Dixon to talk about and demonstrate Japanese food. What a very charming lady! Moved from Tokyo to USA, back to Tokyo, met her Welsh husband and moved to England some nineteen years ago. Although she has lots of academic qualifications, her great love is Japanese food.

Market Harborough based Home-Start South Leicestershire, were delighted to win the award for ‘Innovative Substantive Delivery’. Multiply commented that “By weaving budgeting, price comparisons, and portion calculations into meal preparation, the course has empowered parents to develop confidence with numbers in a practical and supportive way.” 

On the weekend of 15/16 March volunteers from the Hallaton Fieldwork Group spent many hours digging exploratory pits in the ground around Kibworth mill. With the assistance of mill volunteers, they sifted the soil looking for items of historical interest. Although the finds were nearly all modern and comprised pottery, brick/tile and animal bone. They used a metal detector on the trenches and spoil. This produced many nails, modern coins and metal fittings (some clearly from parts of the windmill). 

As part of environmental improvements around the Kibworth Mead Academy site, we planted 1,000 hedge whips around the Academy’s car park areas. A total of over 100 enthusiastic Year 8 students planted them throughout a warm March day, Thursday 20.

Kibworth Library will mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day with an exhibition of artefacts kindly loaned by local residents. The display will be open to view during normal library opening hours from late morning on Tuesday 6 May until mid-afternoon on Friday 9. During a recent Wednesday walkabout, my brother and I were fascinated to notice colourful umbrellas in the outdoor seating enclosure of the Coach and Horses - yes Kibworth’s 18^th Century Coaching Inn is back in business.

Almost the last large plot of land within Kibworth village centre might become a building site after all.

In March we had our AGM which was well attended. Martyn Wyburn reported on the current state of the Community Hub. The completion of the new library extension being the highlight of the year. There were no new candidates to join the Trustees. Martyn was re-elected as chair, with Lynn Williams voted in as vice-chair, Mandi Bland as treasurer. Andrew Dawes and Janet Dowling were also re-elected as trustees. Unfortunately, one position that has not been filled is that of secretary. If anyone would like to put themselves forward, we would be pleased to look at co-opting you. The duties are not particularly onerous.
