Local Charity wins Multiply Initiative Numeracy Award

Market Harborough based Home-Start South Leicestershire, were delighted to win the award for ‘Innovative Substantive Delivery’. Archaeological Dig at the Kibworth Harcourt Post Mill

On the weekend of 15/16 March volunteers from the Hallaton Fieldwork Group spent many hours digging exploratory pits in the ground around Kibworth mill. With the assistance of mill volunteers, they sifted the soil looking for items of historical interest. Although the finds were nearly all modern and comprised pottery, brick/tile and animal bone. They used a metal detector on the trenches and spoil. This produced many nails, modern coins and metal fittings (some clearly from parts of the windmill).

I see from an online search that ‘wow’ comes not from English but from Scots. In a 1513 translation of Virgil’s Aeneid, translator Gavin Douglas wrote the lines, ‘Out on thir wanderand spiritis, wow!’ – not that this leaves me any the wiser. We tend to say wow when we’re surprised, impressed or astonished: it’s embedded in the language and has become a kind of verbal reflex.
