Leicestershire Wildlife Hospital are holding a Charity Barn Dance on Saturday 2 May. It will be in the Liberal Club, 82 Bull Head Street, Wigston, LE18 1PA. With live music provided by Greenshoots Ceilidh Band from 7.30 - 11.00pm
The Hallaton Museum is getting a new permanent display for 2026. It's at Hallaton Castle, thanks to a grant from the Leicestershire Archaeological and Historical Society’s Public Heritage Fund.
Local residents from across the district attended a pivotal Harborough District Council (HDC) meeting on Monday 16 March to hear the debate and decision on the local plan (2020 – 2041). More than 80 members of the public were at the council offices to witness the decision by the Council who voted by 17 votes to 15, with one abstention, to submit its Local Plan for examination, a decision that exposes deep divisions over a strategy affecting many thousands of residents and the future shape of the district.
Local author, Adrienne Vaughan’s latest novel ‘Mystery of the Midnight Madonna', has just been nominated for an award by the prestigious Historical Novel Society.
Our March speaker, Penny Morris from Gildings Auctioneers, spoke about provenance and its part in authenticating and valuing items. Her first example was a landscape by artist A.J. Munnings, which was unusual because he famously painted horses. Given to a friend of his, a female Master of the Hunt in the 1930s (again unusual). It sold for £104,000 because of its history.
Friday 13 March was unlucky for us as this was the beginning of the end of our old home when demolition work began on Fleckney Sports Centre. Fleckney Sports Centre may now be fully demolished but a brand, shiny, new hall should be available for us in about a year. In the meantime, we are located in the Main Hall in Kibworth Mead School, Smeeton Road, Kibworth and all are welcome to join us for our Wednesday night sessions beginning at 7pm with free coaching for those who want it. We are looking forward to our club tournament on Wednesday 6 May and everyone is eligible to compete as this contest is handicapped.
Saturday 28 March saw the last carpet bowls game of the indoor season when 24 members battled it out for the Rose Bowl. Spectators enjoyed watching the bowling skills demonstrated in some very close games. In a tense final Rob Tidd beat Helen Nourish (photo) and retained the trophy in the Tidd family (last year it was won by his wife, Karen).
It is very sad to hear that the UK is facing a literacy crisis among children, with statistics indicating a decline in reading enjoyment and frequency. In 2025, the lowest level in 20 years.
