The Long Queue

On Friday 16 September my friend Barbara Beattie and I set off for London to see The Queen Lying in State. We took the 9.35am train from Rugby to Euston. On arrival at Euston we hailed a Black Cab to take us to the end of the Queue. The driver told us that the Queue was closed, but that she would take us to see the flowers. We insisted that she took us to Southwark Park. At 11.00am, after walking across the Park, we found the end of the queue for the Queue.

What a glorious summer we have all had. The weather was certainly kind for our last two village events, Brass on the Grass and the Barn Dance. Once again the former was one of the highlights in our Smeeton social calendar. So many people, both locally and from further afield, joined us to listen as The Oddfellows Brass Band entertained us once again. With refreshments being served, the evening proved to be a resounding success. All of the donations going to GEMS in memory of Kelvin Capell, a much loved member of our community.

Bluebells - 9 Interesting Facts

In the United Kingdom, the British Bluebell is a protected species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. It is a criminal offence to uproot the wild common bluebell from land on which it naturally grows. Any trade in wild common bluebell bulbs or seeds is also an offence, carrying fines of up to £5000 per bulb.

The local branch of the Central Midlands Co-op bade a fond good-bye to their manager Donna Rood on Sunday 6 February. Donna has, very much, been a team player in our community over the last few years. And, even more so during the pandemic. We wish her every success in her next appointment and welcome Suni to Kibworth.

Good news for Christmas – What COP26 Achieved

The good news about COP26 is that we’re on the way to reaching a safer limit to global warming. We still need to speed up and give far more help to the poorer nations suffering the worst effects of climate change and the pandemic. So not exactly a COP out! The countries have agreed to meet again next year in Egypt to get closer to the target temperature.
