At their October meeting members enjoyed a fascinating talk about the work of GEMS Charity. This is run by local couple Sally and Andy Anderson. Their aim is to make life more comfortable for people attending the chemotherapy suite at Leicester Royal Infirmary. In the past decade they have given an amazing £275,000 to the department.

A team of crafty volunteers have been involved in a unique charity appeal. They are creating the ‘Harborough Crochet Christmas Tree’ from hundreds of crocheted ‘granny squares’ made by local people.

Local Smeeton Westerby resident Bob Capell had an idea before the first locked down to collect old car batteries to weigh them in for cash for GEMS Charity. Eighteen months later this came to fruition. Andy from GEMS and Bob packed up Bob’s truck and went to a scrap metal dealer in Market Harborough unloaded. They unloaded the truck and were presented with a check for £328.48, what a fantastic amount well done and thanks Bob.

We finally managed to hold the first meeting of the New Normal Cancer Support Group. It was lovely to see everyone.

The clocks have gone back, the nights are drawing in and the first signs of Christmas are appearing in the shops.
