Summer Events and Community News from Smeeton Westerby

News from Smeeton Westerby

What a joyous occasion it was at Christ Church’s outdoor service at the end of May. Over 30 people joined us for breakfast before the family service began.

As the final hymn, Shine, Jesus Shine, was being sung, the sun suddenly shone down on everyone and a flock of doves flew up in the distance. It was quite magical.

Our CoCo mornings are now going on hold for the summer but will resume on Wednesday 16 September between 10.30am and 12 noon, so please do put this date in your diaries.

Brass on the Grass

Brass on the Grass, our annual concert with The Oddfellows Brass Band, will be held on Sunday 5 July at the allotments, Pit Hill, Smeeton.

The concert starts at 6pm, but please arrive early to set up your chairs and partake in the refreshments on offer. Langton Brewery’s Inclined Plane, Prosecco, strawberries and cream are always a must on these occasions.

The event is free, but any donations will be most gratefully received. Donations will go to a cause very dear to the hearts of the band members.

Village BBQ

On Saturday 25 July we are holding our village BBQ, starting at 5pm in the field behind the church.

BBQs, tables and chairs will be set up and all you have to do is bring along your meat or vegetarian option to cook and anything you would like to accompany it. There will be a barrel of Inclined Plane beer on offer, but please bring along anything else you would like to drink.

This is always a very social event and is enjoyed by all.

Quiz Night and Harvest Celebration

Our Quiz Night and Harvest Celebration will be held in the Village Hall on 11 September at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.

Tickets, including supper, are £15 and can be purchased from Philippa on 0116 279 3841.

Christ Church Services

As happens each summer, we only have one service a month, which is our communion service on the first Sunday.

Morning Prayer and Family Services restart again in September, with the first Family Service being our Harvest Festival at 10am on 13 September.

The King’s Head

On Sunday 21 June from 1pm, Gems’s are holding their Summer Shindig, featuring live music, a BBQ, a plant sale and games.

As always, on the first Wednesday of each month, it’s Live Jazz from 8pm.

On Thursday 16 July, Braybrook Morris Dancers will be entertaining visitors from 8pm.

Then, over the weekend of 4 September, The King’s Head Summer Beer Festival returns, featuring beers from Norfolk.

Finally, on Saturday 18 July, there will be a charity quiz event, so do contact Edd and Andrew to book your places.
