Kibworth Art Lovers Society
Cordell Garfield
Professional artist, Cordell Garfield, has painted in oils for over 25 years, choosing portraiture as his main subject. Since last month’s focus was also portraiture, in April’s meeting, Kibworth Art Lovers were interested to see the difference between the mediums of pastels and oils for this topic.
Cordell pointed out that one of the advantages of oils is that the artist can apply light over dark and he demonstrated how he begins a portrait by painting in the darker shadows, having carefully measured and outlined the shape of the face. He then mixes the skin tones from a limited palette, remembering that a variety of colours can be detected in the skin. Facial features, eyes, nose and mouth, are then painted in detail. As he worked, Cordell talked about his choice of paper, his preferred paints and types of brushes. Our members and visitors appreciated a fascinating evening with a highly skilled artist.
