Gartree Super-prison

On 16 November, Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, approved the construction of England’s largest prison to house 1,700 prisoners on land adjacent to HMP Gartree.

This goes against both the unanimous decision of our locally elected Harborough District Council planning committee recommendation as well as the clear recommendation of the independent Planning Inspector following an eight day planning inquiry and several months of deliberation.

Building this huge development will have wide-ranging effects on the local countryside. Traffic through Foxton and particularly past Foxton School will increase substantially and many rural views will be changed forever.

Gartree Action, along with our MP (Neil O’Brien) and Harborough District Council, will continue to look for ways to fight the decision and obtain the best possible outcome for residents.
