Gumley celebrates the Platinum Jubilee

On Friday 3 June the weather was beautifully sunny and warm for a Day of Celebration for our Queens Platinum Jubilee.

Our village was all decked out in bunting and some flags were flying too. The Village Hall looked particularly festive with the bunting crisscrossed across the forecourt.

The first item of the day was a Baking Competition. All cakes and biscuits were to be delivered to The Village Hall for 11.30am for Judging. There were quite a few entries all of which looked delicious. Judging was made by some of our village residents. There were 2 prizes to be won, best adult and best child.

At 4pm we had an Afternoon Tea Event.

Here the cakes and biscuits that had been made were quickly devoured. All were delicious and scones, jam and cream with tea and coffee were on the menu.

At 2pm there was a Fancy Dress Wheelbarrow Race.

Starting from the top of the village, near the church, downhill to the local pub The Bell. The contestants had to stop to do tasks, along the way. These included carrying a cup of water, eating donuts hands free, getting through a hoop, eating marshmallows and bouncing a ball on a Tennis Racket.

It was such fun watching them hurtling down the village (WE HAD STOPPED THE TRAFFIC)

5.30pm was Gumley Olympics on the Village field

Such fun! Activities included three-legged sack and space hopper races, egg and spoon race, tug of war and a game of rounders for all ages.

At 7.30pm there was a BBQ and Picnics on the field near the church.

We also had ‘A Silent Disco.’ We set up our chairs and brought our blankets as well as food and beverages along. We all had lots of fun and a great ending to a lovely Jubilee Day.
