Editor’s Footnote: John Sydney Carter was a painter when he first became a member of the Leicester Society of Artists. He was also an apprentice industrial designer with local company, Slaters, and part time student at Leicester College of Art and Design.
After completing his apprenticeship and two years’ National Service, John returned to Leicestershire and in particular Foxton, where he launched his own industrial design company, Carter Design.
He became a Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptures and also of the Chartered Society of Designers.
One of his many sculptures is called ‘Concerto’ – a stainless steel structure that stands proudly in front of De Montfort Hall.
