John Tillotson, a retired Solicitor, has retired as Clerk to Illston Parish Estate (otherwise known as lllston Town Land Charity) with effect from 31 December after holding the position for an astonishing 56 years. John was appointed in 1968, the year of his marriage, by trustees chaired by the late Lord Hazlerigg when he was a Partner at Wartnaby Solicitors of Market Harborough. During his retirement he has worked from home.

The VASL Car Scheme has been operating since 1987 in Market Harborough and covers two-thirds of Harborough District. The scheme is for anyone who is elderly, disabled, rurally isolated, has no transport of their own or has difficulty accessing public transport. Due to a shortage of drivers, we are prioritising health and hospital appointments.

Although the boat numbers have been down all season, there seems to have been a late spurt of activity. The October half term weeks were reasonably fine, and unseasonably mild, so visitor numbers picked up a bit as well. Later storm Bert wreaked damage across the canal system; in Foxton three large Scots pines came down near Clarks Bridge (No 5) blocking the navigation. They have been cleared now.

The Foxton Society will be holding a joint event with the Foxton Adventure Scouts on Monday 3 February, 8pm in the Robert Monk Hall. The event will be a talk by Foxton’s very own Jacob Hudson, who, with a fellow explorer, travelled the length of an uncharted Amazon river and picked up two Guinness World records along the way. It promises to be extremely interesting. After the talk, the Foxton Society will hold a very short AGM with nibbles.
