Inspired by Winter Watch and Countryfile, many people added ‘Video a Starling Murmuration’ to their bucket list. Recently, the early evening spectacular in the centre of Kibworth has given much pleasure. However, spare a thought for those in the immediate area. They have not only ‘got the t-shirt’ but also the patio, car and garden covered in starling poo. Not to mention the noise!

Illston on the Hill WI invited Yuki Dixon to talk about and demonstrate Japanese food. What a very charming lady! Moved from Tokyo to USA, back to Tokyo, met her Welsh husband and moved to England some nineteen years ago. Although she has lots of academic qualifications, her great love is Japanese food.

Some readers may not know that during World War II long before the formation of the Kibworth & District Chronicle there existed The Kibworth News and Forces’ Journal. No.1 was published in 1944. In 1945, issue No 2 was sent free to all those serving in His Majesty’s Forces. It is subtitled Vth Birthday and Victory Number.

Spring is in the air, and we have an exciting lineup of events at the golf club. Whether you enjoy a relaxing Sunday lunch, testing your knowledge at a quiz night, or indulging in a delightful afternoon tea, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Incidentally afternoon teas will be served from Tuesday 6 May – Saturday 10 May to celebrate VE Day/week. Vouchers should be purchased from the club in advance. I was fortunate enough to acquire a copy of this 171 year old railway timetable. It appeared in the Market Harborough Advertiser in both January and October 1854. It charts the journey from Stamford in Lincolnshire through Leicestershire to connecting lines for London and Liverpool. This was issued on behalf of the Rugby and Stamford Branch line.

On the weekend of 15/16 March volunteers from the Hallaton Fieldwork Group spent many hours digging exploratory pits in the ground around Kibworth mill. With the assistance of mill volunteers, they sifted the soil looking for items of historical interest. Although the finds were nearly all modern and comprised pottery, brick/tile and animal bone. They used a metal detector on the trenches and spoil. This produced many nails, modern coins and metal fittings (some clearly from parts of the windmill).

As part of environmental improvements around the Kibworth Mead Academy site, we planted 1,000 hedge whips around the Academy’s car park areas. A total of over 100 enthusiastic Year 8 students planted them throughout a warm March day, Thursday 20.
