If, like me, your tree knowledge is sketchy, winter is a good time to identify a few species. Away from parks and gardens, native species make up a high proportion of the trees that you might find. Some of the commoner species are described below.

Four miles north of Market Harborough lies the small village of Thorpe Langton, whose name translates to ‘long town’ in Anglo-Saxon. During the early 19th century, the census records indicated a population of 215 individuals residing in the village in 1821. This figure gradually declined to 83 by 1881 but has since experienced a modest resurgence, with a recorded population of 231 as per the 2021 census.

We read recently that Dave Quelch has passed away at home aged 85 years. Dave, together with his wife Jenifer, were landlords of the The Black Horse pub in Foxton and The Bell in Gumley which had quite a lot of cricket memorabilia on the wall. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Our indoor carpet bowls season is continuing with the start of various trophy competitions, as well as our social bowling on Monday afternoons and evenings.
