Illston-on-the-Hill WI had that excited ‘back to school’ feeling at their September meeting. Almost all members were able to be present. After the usual short business meeting, we were entertained by our speaker for the evening, Chris Knight. His presentation was titled ‘Auntie, the war is over’.

Leicester Cathedral will host one of our foremost local choirs this autumn. The Harborough Singers, who regularly appear in cathedrals across the UK and sang at York Minster in March, are delighted to be able to present a concert of reflective and uplifting music, in their local cathedral on All Saint’s Day, Saturday 1 November.

Fleckney 1 were confident going into the final Elbow Tankard match to decide the fourth semi-final team. They were fully expecting to overwhelm their own second team, but were pulled up short when the latter went into a 4/0 lead. The first team dug deep with Bob Pateam buting 5 from 6, and Andy Haddon 4 from 6, to grab a 12/8 victory.

Three years after retiring I was stuck in a rut; I “needed to get out more”. So in 2011, after seeing an article in the Kibworth & District Chronicle, I went to Kibworth Bowling Club’s open day. This decision I have never regretted. I was made to feel very welcome and introduced to “mats, bias, jacks and woods”. After an hour’s bowling the coach bought me a beer at the club’s bar.
