Mothers’ Union Anniversary Service
A warm, joyful spirit filled Leicester Cathedral on Sunday 9 August as a well-attended special 150th Mothers’ Union service brought together members from across the diocese including some representatives from our own longstanding Kibworth MU group. The occasion marked a significant milestone in the worldwide Mothers’ Union story, honouring 150 years of faith, fellowship, and practical Christian service to families in need of support.
Senior cathedral staff were present to support and celebrate the event, including Bishop Martyn, The Very Revd Karen Rooms, The Revd Canon Emma Davies, and The Revd Canon Sarah Siddique Gill. Their presence underscored the importance of Mothers’ Union’s ministry in family life, community outreach, and global advocacy.
The service itself was rich and uplifting, with international representation and singing that highlighted the global reach of Mothers’ Union. Voices from different lands and cultures blended beautifully, reminding everyone that MU’s mission of prayer, practical support, and empowerment extends far beyond local boundaries.
After the service, the congregation enjoyed tea and plenty of cake, giving space for conversation, reunion, and shared celebration. The atmosphere was one of gratitude for the past 150 years and for the ongoing commitment of MU members who continue to serve with compassion and faith.
It was a memorable afternoon for all who attended, and a proud moment for our Kibworth group to be part of such a significant milestone in the life of Mothers’ Union.
Earlier in the year we were also delighted to be able to attend the national celebratory service at St Paul’s cathedral London with a congregation of well over a thousand which was presided over by the Archbishop of Canterbury and MU global president.
