Ilston-on-the-Hill WI – Bystanders can save lives

At our May meeting, Illston on the Hill discussed the Resolutions and dealt with all the business necessary so we could proceed with our quiz, very ably set by Kathy Moss. It was really good fun – entitled ‘Food and Drink’ – it suited all of us. It was an excellent set as all teams were within 5 points of each other. No one actually got full marks, but we were very close. A really good evening which ended in lovely refreshments and catching up with all our friends.
Next month we are off to The Botanical Gardens in Oadby. So we are hoping for good weather and I am sure we will have a very interesting tour.
Bystanders can be Life Savers
Chris and Jane of Illston-on-the-Hill WI recently attended a physical first aid course run by the British Red Cross. The aim of the course was to give people confidence to attempt first aid as they may be the only person on hand to help. Even though you thought you couldn’t put a large heavy person in the recovery position, once you’d been shown the correct way it was easy!
We were challenged to deal with patients suffering from heavy bleeding, head injuries, unresponsive and not breathing, possible strokes and many other scenarios. Sometimes we played the patient and at other times the ‘rescuer’.
It was quite a relief when coffee time came round – complete with chocolate biscuits. However, afterwards there was more work to do and more patients to deal with. These included heart attacks, severe allergic reactions, burns, choking and many more situations.
Whilst it was not easy to fit a three day first aid course into 4 hours, most of the basics were covered and we were even shown that the defibrillator tells us exactly what to do. Rest assured ladies of Illston, we were feeling pretty confident!
We were also told about ‘what3words’. This can be invaluable if you are out walking, climbing or in the countryside. You can give the emergency services your three-word location enabling them to locate you precisely. Well worth looking into. The app assigns every 3m square in the world a unique combination of three random words.
Our thanks go to Uppingham WI for hosting the event.
