Kibworth Community Library – April 2026
Clockmaking, Kibworth Clockmakers, Past and Present

“Each clock is unique, and just like a person, its face, whether plain or pretty, is but a mask for the intricate mechanism it conceals.” The Clockmaker’s Daughter – Kate Morton.
The quote “Time and tide wait for no man” is attributed to Geoffrey Chaucer, emphasizing the inevitability of time and the importance of taking action. Unfortunately, procrastination can lead to missed opportunities.
We have experienced a little of that ourselves recently here in the library. We know that your lives can get extraordinarily busy and that last minute decisions are becoming the norm. Sadly, that has meant we have had to cancel events because we haven’t sold enough tickets, only to be told by people that they are disappointed because they were going to come along. So, please get your tickets early if you can, rather than in the nick of time (see what we did there?).
Apparently, there have been clockmakers in Kibworth for centuries. We are delighted to welcome Kibworth’s C. Mike Folwell MBHI to the library on Thursday 7 May to give a talk entitled “Clockmaking, Kibworth Clockmakers, Past and Present”.
He’ll be looking at what clocks are, how they are made and who, what and how other trades are engaged in making what we have remaining today. He’ll also be discussing longcase clocks as these were most often made in the village.
Doors open at 11:45am for a 12pm start. Tickets are on sale now in the library and on Ticket Source for £7 and include a delicious snack lunch at 1pm (gluten free is available).
May’s Book Sale is on Saturday 9 from 10am till 12noon. We’ve had lots of lovely donations recently, so you’ll have plenty of great books to choose from.
