Editorial Comment May 2026

Fifty years ago, as a now-famous computer company was just starting out in a garage in California, the wonderful people of Kibworth were getting ready for the Kibworth Festival 1976. It was a celebration of community for everyone, no matter their age or abilities. Before computers were common in homes, before smart TVs and streaming, even before the ‘Kibworth Chronicle’ came along, the festival featured things like inter-street rounders matches, band concerts and all sorts of fun activities.
Lots of things have happened over the last fifty years! The village has really grown. Now, we can chat with our near neighbours online and even connect with people all over the globe. Have we lost the sense of community? What do you think? Should we consider having another Kibworth Festival sometime, say in May or June 2027? Let’s look at some ideas!
Sports
The village boasts some truly excellent sporting facilities, including the cricket, bowls, tennis and golf clubs. Plus, the football club is incredibly lively. We could put together a week-long sporting event where everyone can experience different clubs, with each club showcasing its activities on a specific day. This would highlight how they contribute to our vibrant community.
Arts
The village is not only blessed with the sporting facilities mentioned, but it also has has two drama societies: Last Minute Theatre and Main Stage Theatre Company.
We have had the pleasure of enjoying music from the Kibworth Ladies Choir, Jazz on a Wednesday evening, a recent wonderful concert of classical music in St Wilfrid’s Church on a Friday night with David Le Page and the Harborough Collective, Kibworth Band concerts with the junior band, The Kiblettes and the Kibworth Art Lovers Summer Exhibition.
The list goes on and on! Wouldn’t it be lovely to have another week filled with arts and music?
Cake
Have you heard about the Cake Picnic in Mexico recently? It’s a lovely event where people get together to share their favourite cakes with friends and neighbours. Imagine having a Cake Picnic on Warwick Park, where the skateboard community puts on a show of tricks for everyone to enjoy. Just a heads-up: no buns or small cakes are allowed, so all the cakes need to be cut up for everyone to share.
The Village of Culture?
Let’s have a fun filled Festival of Kibworth 2027! Thinking caps on! Having heard of the ‘City of Culture’ and Market Harborough as a ‘Town of Culture’, lets’s have Kibworth as ‘The Village of Culture’ next year.
