KGC’s Chosen Charities
KGC is teeing up for an exciting new season as we welcome our incoming captains, Phil Thomason, Julie Simpson and Mia Ashton. At the recent drive-in, they announced their chosen charities for the year ahead: Heartwize and The Melanoma Trust.
The previous captains set a remarkable standard, raising an impressive £9,690.00 for Mind. Their efforts were supported wholeheartedly by members throughout the year and will no doubt make a meaningful difference.
Now, the baton passes to our new captains, who bring fresh energy and a shared commitment to causes close to their hearts.
Supporting Heartwize
Heartwize is a Leicester-based charity initiative launched in 2014 by local cardiologists. Its mission is to boost survival rates and increase public awareness of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. The charity works to:
- Ensure basic resuscitation skills are taught in schools
- Improve awareness and provision of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in the community
- Provide support and training in life-saving CPR skills
By equipping more people with the knowledge to recognise and respond to cardiac arrest, Heartwize aims to increase survival rates and save thousands of lives.
Key facts:
- The UK survival rate for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is less than 10%
- Around 60,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur each year in the UK
- Most happen at home
- Only 30–40% of victims receive bystander CPR
The captains hope to use the club’s events and competitions to shine a spotlight on prevention, education and support. They are planning several workshops for members, teaching how to administer CPR and how to use a defibrillator.
Supporting The Melanoma Trust
Alongside this, the captains have chosen to support The Melanoma Trust, a charity dedicated to raising awareness of melanoma and other skin cancers.
Through initiatives such as sun safety education and early detection guidance, the charity works tirelessly to reduce the incidence of skin cancer and encourage people to check their skin regularly – a particularly fitting cause for a sport played outdoors.
Looking Ahead
Over the coming year, members can look forward to a calendar packed with fundraising events – from charity golf days and raffles to social evenings and friendly competitions – all designed to bring the club together while supporting these vital causes.
