The Loss of Illston’s Oldest Resident. 1927-2025.

Margaret Amy Simkin was born at Kings Norton in May 1927, a daughter for John and Violet, a sister for Mary and Betty. Known as Amy throughout her long life she resided in the Illston district contributing greatly to the rural community.

She attended Kibworth Grammar School and Leicester Domestic Science College. Her excellent culinary skills served her well throughout her life. After the sudden death of her father, Amy left college to help on the family farm. Her social activities centred around the Norton and Gaulby Young Farmer’s Club. She enjoyed singing and with her sister Mary, was a major voice with the Christmas Eve Carol Singers.

On 8th June 1954 Amy married Walter making their home in Main Street, Illston. They had two sons John and Patrick. Walter and Amy later moved to a house near the church. Amy was a true family person and loved to talk of her many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Amy had a great friend in Dorothy Nourish and it was said that “Amy and Auntie Dot ran the village for many years!” It is partly thanks to them that there is now a thriving village and flourishing village hall. For many years Amy arranged the renowned Illston Whist Drives. These social occasions raised funds for the hall and the church. Amy and Dot would often be found busy cleaning in the hall and they generously cared for the church in the same way for countless years.

Amy was a valued and active member of the Women’s Institute and a great contributor to the annual village fete. The Tuesday evening badminton sessions held in the village hall were arranged by Amy, encouraging locals of any age to play. Her efforts were limitless. Their wonderful garden was their pride and joy. Walter growing vegetables whilst Amy tended the flowers.

After Walter died, Amy was gradually restricted in her activities. For the last few years she was cared for by a very dedicated team, some of whom surpassed their expected responsibilities meaning Amy was able to remain in her home until she died peacefully there, aged 98, on 11th December. A true country lady.
