Open Gardens February and March

Sunday 15th February

On Sunday 15 February, 10am-4pm, visit Oak Cottage, Swadlincote, DE11 8AG. A half-acre garden set around Blackfordby’s ‘hidden’ listed 300-year-old thatched cottage; 3.4 acres of paddocks; front and rear gardens to explore with extensive displays of snowdrops, which include a named collection as well as hellebores throughout; a large selection of mature Magnolia trees, specimen trees, several ponds, a waterfall and a restored well.

Also on Sunday 15 February, 10:30am-4pm is The Acers Hinckley, LE10 1NA. A lovely Japanese themed garden. The garden owner is a keen snowdrop collector with over 200 varieties on display alongside Trilliums, Cyclamen, scented Hamamelis, and Erythronium. Recently, two new snowdrop beds have been added to the garden, including a new bed in the centre of the lawn with 21 new and rare varieties on show.

Saturday 21st/Sunday 22nd February

Saturday/Sunday 21/22 February, 11am-4pm, see the winter garden at Hedgehog Hall, Tilton on the Hill, LE7 9DE. Beautiful shaded and woodland areas, with a large collection of around 350 different snowdrops. All set on the north-facing terraces along with many unusual hellebores, trilliums, euphorbias, ferns, cyclamen, pulmonaria and many rare bulbs. Many highly perfumed winter flowering shrubs: daphne, viburnum, sarcococca and hamamelis. This lovely garden featured in a winter special for BBC Gardeners’ World in 2025.

Also on Saturday/Sunday 21/22 February, 11am-4pm is West View, Great Glen LE8 9EH. There will be 300 varieties of snowdrops on display, along with winter colour provided by cyclamen, crocus, hellebores, aconites, ranunculus ficaria, and iris reticulata. Evergreen ferns, box, yew, and flowering shrubs: hamamelis, daphne and sarcococca will complement the display. Teas and cakes will be on sale, together with homemade soup to fend off any winter chill.

Sunday 8th March

On Sunday, 8 March, 11am-4pm, Tresillian House, Melton Mowbray LE13 0BQ opens its lovely, tranquil garden. Features a wide range of interesting specimen trees, with a natural pond, natural bog garden and koi carp pond. Many unusual plants for differing seasons. Working vegetable garden. Heated and cold greenhouses. Refreshments, hot soups and Cream Teas in February.
