News from Smeeton Westerby

After Christmas, I’d like to reflect on recent events in our village. We held a successful Christmas Fayre with lively chatter and laughter. The following Wednesday, Helen Benton, our village Pilates teacher, organised a well-attended ‘LOROS’ Coffee morning, raising another £500 for a deserving charity. This added to the £200 raised from CoCo mornings and £300 from the Christmas Fayre.

On 12 December, ‘The Oddfellows Brass Band’ held a beautiful Christmas Concert in the church. The conductor was amusing, and the band members’ expertise made for an enjoyable evening. They joined us again for our Candlelit Carol Service on 21 December where the packed congregation sang and listened to readings to bring the Christmas story to life.

Many children, parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles joined us for our Crib Service on Christmas Eve despite the freezing cold. The atmosphere was lovely, and everyone seemed to have the best of times.

January brings a well-deserved break for our village hall committee, with the only event being our CoCo (Coffee and Conversation) morning on Thursday 22 January, 10.30-12 noon in the village hall. It’s free, but donations are welcome. Delicious cakes are on offer too.

A date for your diary

On Saturday 11 April, actor Tony Harris, known for his Henry V impersonation, will speak about Donald Trump at our village hall. Tickets are £15, including supper. More information will follow next month.

Christ Church services

Christ Church services continue as follows: Holy Communion on the first Sunday, informal morning worship on the second, and a relaxed family service on the third. All services start at 10 am, followed by refreshments and socialising.

Smeeton Fellowship Group

The Smeeton Fellowship Group offers walk-in evenings on the second Sunday of every month between 5-6 pm in the village hall. Everyone is welcome to ask questions about faith, receive prayer, or simply join in. No pressure, no appointment needed.

The King’s Head

The King’s Head celebrates Burns Night on Saturday 24 January and a ‘Gems’ Charity quiz night on Saturday 31 January . These events are popular, so book your place. The first Wednesday of the month is Jazz Club, where you can enjoy live jazz.
