Wine note

Errazuriz  Grand Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 (Tesco – around £9)

We had decided to go on a wine tasting trip. But after France and Italy, where to? Spain, perhaps, or Portugal? But we were bold, so Chile it was.

But which estates? We made Errazuriz our first choice because we liked the wines and because it was near the Andes and so had a view of Aconcagua. An email solicited a positive response and an unexpected bonus: an invitation to lunch for the four of us. That made the visit truly memorable and, naturally, I have been a fan of Errazuriz wines ever since.

This is an excellent example. It has lots of blackcurrant fruit balanced by tannin and there’s acidity to keep it fresh. It’s from Tesco so the price you pay depends on whether you use your club card and if you can time your visit to get 25% off.

The whites are good too – try Aconcagua Chardonnay or Casablanca Valley Sauvignon Blanc from Majestic at £10.

Or push the boat out at Christmas with Max Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon at around £14 from Ocado and Amazon.

I looked back through my records to find out the date of our visit: it was February 2007. Is it time to return? It must be.

Merry Christmas.
