Kibworth Art Lovers’ Society
To an artist, the benefits of sketching are invaluable according to professional artist and teacher, Helen Neave. In the November meeting of Kibworth Art Lovers, she demonstrated & spoke about the way she uses her own sketches when completing an artwork. Not only is sketching useful for training the brain, improving observation skills and hand-eye co-ordination. It also transports the artist back to the atmosphere of the moment. Notes taken whilst sketching remind the artist of subtle details to be included in a finished piece of work.

Sri Lanka
For her demonstration, Helen chose a subject which reflected her interest in natural history, a passion since early childhood. During a trekking expedition in Sri Lanka she had produced several sketches of the carnivorous plant known as Pitcher Pods. It was these she used to show how she applies them to the creation of a finished piece of work. With constant reference to her sketches, Helen worked on what she called an undersketch, concentrating on the humid atmosphere of the jungle. After planning the composition with a pencil draft, a limited pallet of cerulean blue, transparent yellow and Paynes grey watercolour was applied ‘wet on wet’. This gave a soft, misty background on which to paint the more precise shapes of the Pitcher Pods and the surrounding jungle foliage. Helen’s entertaining and informative presentation was much appreciated by our members and guests.
You can see more about Helen’s artwork at Wild Corners Art website.
The Kibworth Art Lovers will now take a break from meetings until February, with a sketching event planned for January. In the meantime, we hope those who walk past the Kibworth branch of the Market Harborough Building Society will enjoy our Christmas Wreath displayed on the art wall.
