Bringing Light to Winter: Home-Start’s Snowdrop Planting Begins
Staff from the Market Harborough based charity recently came together to plant snowdrop bulbs outside the charity’s premises on Coventry Road. This promises a vibrant visual display as the flowers bloom early in the New Year.
Home-Start’s ‘Charity Champions’ organised donations of bulbs from the Harborough community to support the charity’s annual Snowdrop Appeal, which runs throughout January and February. The snowdrop – an early, hopeful sign of spring – has become a powerful symbol for the charity. It represents the resilience, renewed growth, and fresh beginnings experienced by families who receive Home-Start support. The appeal aims to brighten what can be a challenging time of year for many families.

The charity is encouraging members of the community to share photos of snowdrops, which will be displayed on Home-Start South Leicestershire’s social media pages. Supporters are also invited to contribute donations via the charity’s Local Giving page. Photos will enter a prize draw and winners will receive vouchers from supporting local businesses, including Langton Greenhouse and Garden Centre and Lamport Hall.
Charity Manager, Stella Renwick, said:
“Planting these snowdrops together is a simple act, but it reflects something much bigger. It shows how our community comes together to help families through their most difficult moments. Every photo shared and every donation made through the Snowdrop Appeal helps us continue supporting parents who need a little extra warmth and understanding during the winter months.”
The planted bulbs are expected to bloom in time for the peak of the Appeal, creating natural displays that mirror the charity’s message of hope, renewal, and brighter days ahead.
The charity will also be selling snowdrop themed greetings cards, created by local designer, Marina Berry. Other snowdrop-related activities for families include guided walks and “Name the Plushie,” which will be announced in the New Year.
Home-Start South Leicestershire currently supports around 140 families each year across the Harborough District. It provides emotional, practical and non-judgmental help to parents with young children. The Snowdrop Appeal not only raises vital funds for the charity’s services but also fosters community connection during the often difficult post-Christmas period.
