“Sewing is a way to mark our existence on cloth: patterning our place in the world” ― Clare Hunter, Threads of Life: A history of the world through the eye of a needle
Sewing is an ancient craft, with the oldest known sewing needles being over 20,000 years old, made from bone or animal horn. The luxurious embroidery work of Opus Anglicanum is a little more recent than that, dating to between the 1200 and 1400s. Indeed the broderers (embroiderers) of the time created beautiful, detailed, religious works in gold and silver thread.
The Circle of Life – An Opus Anglicanum Project

We are delighted to have Alison Andrews from the Derby Cathedral Embroidery Workshop come to give a talk entitled “The Circle of Life – An Opus Anglicanum Project”. She will be telling us all about this major modern embroidery project. It has been created using the ancient craft of Opus Anglicanum, to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Worshipful Company of Upholders. Please join us in our new library on Wednesday 26 November. Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. Tickets are on sale in the library for £6 and include a complimentary glass of wine / soft drink.
Kibworth & District Heritage Society
The Kibworth History Society has been resurrected as the Kibworth and District Heritage Society. We are delighted that they have made the library their new home. They meet monthly and in November they will be hosting a talk by John Tillotson. ‘Kibworth’s National School’, which was called the Junior School and was housed in what is now the doctors’ surgery. The meeting is from 7pm until 8.30pm on Thursday 13 November. Please just turn up if you’re interested. Non-members pay only £1.
Christmas!
As usual, we will be taking part in the Kibworth Christmas Event which this year is on Thursday 4 December. There will be our ‘Win every time’ tombola, plenty of children’s activities and, of course, a few books for sale!
We’ll be having our first Book Sale in our new space on Saturday 6 December from 10am till 12pm. It’s on the same day as Bridge 67’s Cheese Festival so there’ll be plenty to buy! And we will also be holding our now legendary Chocolate Hamper raffle!
