Joining the A6 – Turn Left!

No-one living in Kibworth is unaware that the A6 is a very busy road. This is proved time and again when there is any sort of hold up, by the length of the queues which form rapidly.

Improving the situation for vehicles joining from Marsh Drive and Main Street would require very radical changes to the existing road layout, probably with little overall benefit to total traffic flow. The best solution for them would be the much-needed bypass which would reduce the volume of traffic on the A6. However, joining the A6 from Church Road could be made safer and quicker today by a small change in driver behaviour i.e. by everyone only turning left.

To turn left there is only one lane of A6 traffic to join. To turn right there are two A6 lanes to consider, and also the A6 to Church Road right turn lane. So the left turn is the easier and safer. It is made less so by the fact that there are two lanes on Church Road, and, with vehicles in both lanes, those turning right block the view of those wishing to turn left. This causes delay and traffic build up in the left lane even if it is clear for it to turn onto the A6. Travel in the Market Harborough direction after a left turn can be achieved by making a U-turn at the Wistow Lane roundabout.

Without making the Church Road junction Left Turn only, the same effect could be achieved by everyone voluntarily turning left. Why not give it a try?
