Look After Your Mind – Organ Language
In hypnotherapy there is an intriguing phenomenon called organ language. This is to distinguish it from body language, like folding one’s arms defensively. I first came across it when a client, Greg came to see me wondering if hypnotherapy could help his eczema. The procedure is to relax someone into hypnosis. Then investigate any past experiences that have led to the creation of the issue. Memories appear in the conscious mind released from the subconscious that in most cases strives to support and protect the life of the whole individual.
Vivid Memory
In Greg’s case a vivid memory occurred to him. He came out of hypnosis spontaneously and said with feeling, a certain politician ‘really got under my skin!’ Subconsciously he had taken the idea literally and translated it into physical symptoms. Greg went on to talk some more about the matter. Saying that when that person’s political party was subsequently re-elected he was ‘gutted’. I asked him if he’d had any stomach problems around that time and he said, ‘Yes, but how did you know?’
Another client was a young mother who was troubled by insomnia. She felt that this happened because she lay awake in case her baby became distressed. This proved to be the case. Her solution was to turn the volume of her baby monitor up to full, so that any cries from her child would waken her at once. I noticed that she had a rash on her forearms. I asked if she’d like to investigate that, but she was still preoccupied with her child and went on to say, ‘Yes, the itchiness keeps me awake. But I don’t mind because it keeps me on red alert for any distress from my baby.’ Her wish to be on ‘red alert’ was manifesting itself as her rash.
In my experience organ language is a rare phenomenon. You can learn more by going online. As far as I know I don’t experience organ language, though I’m still very loath to say ‘my feet are killing me!’
