St Andrew’s Turret Clock
Our ancient turret clock has recently been returned to the church and is now on display in the north aisle. It dates from 1629 and is a rare example of an oak framed mechanism with the workings made by a blacksmith. It ceased to work as the turret clock in about 1890.
About 20 years ago it was sent away to be renovated but was lost.
After much detective work, Foxton resident, Carl Bedford tracked down its whereabouts and repossessed it for the village. It was in individual pieces, including the wooden frame.
We should be grateful to Carl for painstakingly reassembling it over the course of a year. Thanks also to Bill Bray for his help.
The clock was unveiled after the service on Sunday 16 February in the presence of over thirty villagers and friends.
William Sunderland, a horologist with the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers, told us how unique the clock is.
