Dear Editor – Remembering Beryl Tory

She was an inspiration to so many people from all walks of life and a wonderful friend to everyone at Last Minute Theatre. There was nothing she wouldn’t do (double negative intended!). Many memories of course, from singing, to drama and to comedy.

Beryl was dyslexic (though not normally apparent) and would occasionally paraphrase (don’t we all?).

Two distinct memories are.

First, when Beryl sang the duet

‘Oh yes, I remember it well’

“That brilliant sky

We had some rain

Those Russian songs

From sunny Spain?”

in perfect tune and delivery –

“We had some rain” suddenly became “It rained a bit” – but the song continued seamlessly to the end, of course!

Second, in basque and suspenders, and probably by then in her 70s, Beryl sang, teased and acted ‘I’ll Make a Man of Any One of You!’ What a trooper!

In a nod to Beryl, come September, I may be tempted to get out my fishnets, high heels and low-cut top! (Hope no one brings their opera glasses)

Fly high Beryl
