News from Smeeton Westerby
Well, what a fabulous night we had at our Village Variety Show. It was full of talent, laughter and fun. After supper had been served, the show opened with Phil Lee singing ‘Bring Him Home’ from Les Misérables for which he received a standing ovation. What a great start! Next came sketches, funny poems, monologues and more wonderful singing, finishing with Phil again, this time singing ‘Nessun Dorma‘ which was amazing.
To round off the evening, we all sang a selection of songs to celebrate VE Day on 8th May. So many people said it was one of the best shows they have been to in ages, which was wonderful!
The profit made is going towards upgrading our rather archaic sound system to a much more modern system and this will be installed in the next couple of weeks. We are also delighted to say that we are taking the hall into the 21st century by installing WiFi, thanks to Gigaclear coming to our village.
Main Stage Theatre – What’s ON!
So, what is next? On Friday 13 and Saturday 14 June, we are hosting The Main Stage Theatre Company’s latest Murder Mystery, Murder in the Mailbox.
If you would like tickets for one of these very popular evenings, please ring Janet on 07950 409 610. They cost £15 to include supper and we ask that you bring your own drinks. However, you will need to be quick as we have very few places left.
Open Gardens with Brass on the Grass
Next comes our Open Gardens on Sunday 22 June from 11am to 5pm in aid of GEMS. This is followed by Brass on the Grass, our annual concert by The Oddfellows Brass Band. This is held on the allotments on Pit Hill and runs from 6 to 7.30pm. We ask that you bring a chair or blanket to sit on and we suggest that you get there nice and early in order to buy refreshments – Langton Brewery Beer, Pimms, Prosecco, strawberries and cream etc. – and also to claim your spot.
Add to both of those our CoCo mornings that are held on the third Wednesday of each month and I am sure you will agree there is a lot going on in sunny Smeeton!
Christ Church
We were delighted to welcome into our church, two delightful little girls, Eden and India, for their baptismal service on Easter Sunday. It was a really lovely service lead by Revd. Mary Ireland that was enjoyed by their family and friends as they worshipped alongside the regular congregation.
We also have two weddings coming up soon and are feeling very blessed that people are discovering what a beautiful church we have.
Our next family service on Sunday 8 June is an outdoor service and will once again be held in Janet and Gordon Arthurs’ Garden, Highfields, Gumley Road. We start the proceedings at 9.30am by serving a breakfast of sausage or bacon butties (as well as other refreshments) before the service starts at 10am. We ask that you bring your own chairs if possible. If the weather isn’t good, we will hold the service in the church.
Once again, everyone is welcome.
The King’s Head
Once again we will be welcoming The Fourmasons jazz band to play for us on Wednesday 4 June and then on Friday 7 and Saturday 8 June, it will be our ‘Sausage and Beer’ festival.
Following that on Sunday 15 June, we will be holding a vintage car meet and drive. Finally, at our village Open Gardens on Sunday 22nd June, we will be holding a plant sale and BBQ as well as live music being played from 1pm. There is such a lot happening and we would love it if you could join us.
Just on another note, the information that our café will be reopening was incorrect. Apologies.
