Severn Trent Water visit Year 4
Severn Trent Water visited our Year 4 pupils to share their expertise on the fascinating journey of water. The session was both educational and engaging, leaving our students with a deeper understanding of the water cycle and the vital role Severn Trent plays in managing our water resources.
Water Cycle
During the workshop, our visitor asked the children to explain what they already knew about the water cycle in an interactive and fun way. They reminded the children how water evaporates from rivers and oceans, forms clouds, and returns to the earth as precipitation.
Looking after our Water
Year 4 also discovered how this cycle is crucial for maintaining our water supply. They thought about why it is crucial for us to look after our water supply to ensure that we have clean and safe water for future generations. Water is a finite resource, and with increasing demand and the impacts of climate change, it’s more important than ever to conserve and protect it. Simple actions like fixing leaks, using water-efficient appliances, and being mindful of our water usage can make a big difference.
By taking care of our water supply, we contribute to a sustainable future and help preserve this vital resource for all. The children also learnt that the company is pioneering generating renewable energy from water. They have installed hydro turbines at several sites, which harness the power of flowing water to produce electricity. Even though the River Severn runs over fairly flat ground, they are exploring new ways to use the power of the water. Year 4 were excited to learn that they also convert sewage sludge and food waste into green energy. Another fascinating aspect of Severn Trent’s work is their research into extracting valuable substances from wastewater. By treating and processing waste, they can recover materials that can be used in medicine.
Thank you Severn Trent
Year 4 are now the experts in water and we would like to say a huge thank you to Severn Trent for coming in to our school!
