Illston-on-the-Hill WI – May ’25

Assistance Dogs in Action
Members of Illston WI were treated to an unforgettable and heartwarming talk when Nick Sydenham paid a visit to share the remarkable work of this life-changing charity. Canine Partners is an organisation that transforms lives by training assistance dogs to support people with physical disabilities – many of whom rely on wheelchairs for daily mobility.
Nick captivated the audience with stories that highlighted just how extraordinary these four-legged helpers truly are. The dogs, typically Labradors or retrievers, are carefully selected and trained to match the unique needs of their human partners. Their abilities go far beyond the basic commands most pet dogs know. These intelligent and intuitive companions are capable of performing a wide array of tasks designed to give their partners greater independence and confidence.
Among the many impressive skills these dogs possess, they can open doors, retrieve laundry from washing machines, place it into baskets and even hand pegs to their partner to help them hang clothes out to dry. They’ve also been trained to press buttons. Not just on traffic lights for safe crossing, but also at the entrances to shops, banks and other public spaces.
The list of their talents continues. These dogs can post letters and take a bank card to an ATM (although not quite savvy enough yet to punch in the PIN). They are also always ready to pick up dropped items, no matter how small. They’ll even help put the shopping away and open doors using specially fitted ropes.
A Milestone Birthday
Canine Partners, a national charity based in Osgathorpe, Leicestershire is proudly celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. A significant milestone for a charity that has transformed countless lives. The organisation relies entirely on volunteers who support the charity in a multitude of roles. From fundraising and administration to fostering and training young pups in their early stages of development.
The charity also holds open mornings/afternoons, welcoming members of the public to see first-hand the incredible work being carried out. These events offer a glimpse into the training process and the profound impact the dogs have on their partners’ daily lives.
It costs around £50,000 to train and support one assistance dog throughout its working life. This is a substantial sum made possible only by the dedication and generosity of volunteers and supporters. With over 300 assistance dogs currently working across the UK, Canine Partners collaborates closely with other similar organisations to extend their reach and expertise.
By the end of Nick’s visit, the members of Illston WI were completely blown away by the abilities of these wonderful “best friends”. Their intelligence, loyalty and life-changing impact left a lasting impression. It reminded everyone just how powerful the bond between human and dog can be.
As usual, we ended with wonderful refreshments and the room was buzzing.
Must just mention that we have several members or their family members attending the Royal Garden Party in May. One for farming in the community, another for services to International Scouts, and, finally, a daughter for services to education. We are very proud of them all.
