Gumley bluebells

Gumley bluebells

We held our 20th Bluebell Open Day at The Old Rectory, Gumley, on Sunday 27 April. And for once had absolutely perfect conditions for it. After last year’s drizzle and notwithstanding the fortitude of the 300-odd brave patrons who came then, this year felt like a Chelsea garden moment. The recent cold nights holding the flowers back so that they peaked just at the right time.

As usual, we were supported by our many kind volunteers from the village. Philip and Jane Skinner took their sheep out so that we could use the big field for parking (thank goodness, as there were 171 cars on the day!). Many people donated cakes and tombola prizes.

We had over 550 visitors, many of whom stayed all day and/or combined the day with a refreshing pint in the Bell Inn. At the count, thanks to the huge generosity of visitors, we raised £1,805.90. This smashed our previous record of £730 – quite staggering. The funds raised will be shared between St Helen’s Church, Gumley, and Charity Link based in Leicester.

The only worry now is how we will ever beat this record. Please come again next year and let’s try!
