Time to relax – Mothers’ Union April 2023

In spite of a cool breeze and deluges of rain, 25 individuals turned out for our April MU meeting on Thursday 6 April.

After a short simple service with prayers and hymns we held a ‘sweets’ quiz. With many cryptic clues about familiar ones many of us reminisced about our childhood and current favourites. We all enjoyed a chat with biscuits and tea freely flowing. There was also time to discuss future projects and review the many church social action activities underway including our re-cycling initiative.

At the close of the meeting most attendees went through to the large hall for their ‘Lent Lunch’ this consisting of homemade soup, bread roll with butter and tea or coffee. St Wilfrid’s volunteers from the church Pastoral and MU teams make the soup and serve it running the whole activity on certain Thursdays during Lent. No charge is expected but donations are very welcome.

During lent over the last few years ‘Lent Lunches’ has been delivered in the church hall for anyone wishing to come along. This year our reflection has been on the stations of the cross which was recited at the end of each week’s meal. This was an opportunity to collectively reflect on the true meaning of Easter meditating on the pilgrimage journey of Calvary.

This was the second year that ‘Lent Lunches’ were held and through the generous donations of those attending during the five weeks £273 was raised for the victims of the Turkish/Syrian earthquake. Although no longer making headline news a desperate situation still exists and international humanitarian help badly needed for the relief effort.

If you are considering coming along for a visit, please do, as a warm welcome awaits. Our next meeting is on Thursday 4 May at 11am in St Wilfrid’s church hall and our church service is at 10am.
