News from Smeeton Westerby

With the beginning of a new year, we are starting to look forward to several exciting events that are to be held here in Smeeton at both the church and the village hall.

At Christ Church

On Sunday 4 February, we are delighted to be holding a very special Candlemas service at 4pm. The Leicester Cathedral choir, accompanied by their organist, will be singing as part of the Cathedral’s ‘Together With’ series of Choral Evensongs across the Diocese. The preacher will be Bishop Saju, the Bishop of Loughborough, who always gives an interesting and dynamic sermon. As Christ Church has a very beautiful Candlemas stained glass window by Kempe, we are delighted to be able to celebrate this special 2023 service in this way. We extend a very warm welcome to you all.

Then on Sunday 12 February at 10am, we are holding our first family Express service. Although designed for the younger members of our community, there will be a special message for everyone and how wonderful it would be to have the whole church family, whatever their age, all together. The service will only be 30 minutes long but breakfast refreshments and children’s activities will follow.

At the Village Hall

At 7 for 7.30pm on Friday 3 and Saturday 4 March, we are holding two Murder Mystery evenings. These will be performed by members of MSTC and KTC. The show is titled ‘Dying for a Leek’ or as the cast like to call it ‘Busting for a Pea’! For those of you who haven’t been to a murder mystery before, the evening starts with a 30 minute amusing play during which a crime takes place. Throughout the action lots of clues (and maybe red herrings) are thrown out to help you to decide who you think has performed the dastardly deed.

In order to help feed your little grey cells, we then serve a delicious supper. More clues will be passed around after which the suspects visit each table to be questioned. It is then time for you to decide who you think the murderer is! A final scene reveals the answer and the person or persons closest to the truth wins a prize!

Tickets are £12.50 and can be reserved by ringing Philippa on 0116 2793841.

We ask that you bring your own drinks and glasses. Our tables seat 8 people. You can either work as a team of 8 or in smaller groups – that is up to you!

(If you are unable to attend on these evenings, the show is also being performed in Tur Langton on Friday 10 March and in Church Langton on Saturday 11 March. Just look out for more details.)

One final date for your diaries. On Saturday 22 April Tony Harris, who came to give his amazing rendition of Henry Vlll last year, is by popular demand, coming back to give his performance of Sherlock Holmes. Watch this space for more details.
