Fleckney and Kibworth Running Club January – February 2021 update

Club members have been involved in several events throughout the opening weeks of 2021. We are looking forward to running in smaller groups as Lockdown conditions ease.

In January, John Redfearn and Andy Findley organised a Club Orienteering Event. This offered two options: On the road, between Fleckney and Kibworth, with the option of starting at either end of the route, or from a number of checkpoints in between. An off-road route from Saddington, out across the Gorse to Gumley, and back via Saddington, proved more popular, despite the ankle-deep mud in places. The quickest mud runner was Sam Pole, who covered 6.8 miles in under 57 minutes. Meanwhile Rob Pullen was not only the fastest on the road, but also covered 2 miles further than everyone else, and then had a crack at the off-road route the following day!

Early in February we took part in a Virtual Leicestershire 5k Team Event organised by our friends at West End Runners. As well as an incentive to get out and run 5k, there was an interesting twist to the competition part. The average times and the percentage of club members running, counted towards the results, rather than just the fastest time posted. As a small club, it meant a 30% turnout earned us 7th place out of 16 for the membership element. Overall the club was placed 9th . Another such event at the start of March saw a lower turnout. Thanks to a good average time from our lady runners, we achieved 11th place. Similar events are planned for the next few months as the first few Road League races have been canceled.

A Club event will be held on the weekend of 20th/21st March. This will offer runners the chance to take on the Kibworth 6 Route, or a 3-mile route around Kibworth and Smeeton in a team event. The Battle of Brampton Valley Way is scheduled for 18th April, with Abby Davies, Alan Gibson and Bernie Owen set to run from Market Harborough to Northampton, and back, following the old railway line, a distance of 28 miles. Lorna Muskett has signed up for the Tugby Half Marathon in May. Both events are subject to confirmation at this stage, and the numbers of runners will be limited to help the events run safely. All being well, we are aiming to resume Club nights at the end of March, limited to groups of 6 for the first couple of months.
