Monitoring traffic

The latest Telraam figures monitoring traffic in six designated places around Kibworth makes depressing reading. The six places are Harcourt Estate (for those who are unsure where this is, it is the row of shops on the A6), Church Road, Fleckney Road, Smeeton Road, High Street and the A6 by Crouch’s garage. As alluded to in last month’s issue the A6, which obviously carries the most traffic, in fact, 6.4 million vehicles every year is also a speedway for some motorists!

Any Action?

It would be helpful if our County Councillor (Phil King) – especially as Highways is one of LCC departments –could explain through this publication what notice they are taking of the figures and what action is being taken to alleviate the traffic problems and speeding issues we derive from the figures collected.

In the LCC Network Management Policy and Strategy document it says at Page eight and nine:

2.2 Congestion

As the UKs population has grown, the number of vehicles and journeys have also increased…Managing customer expectations is a key challenge for all LCC services. Data collected by traffic analytics company INRIX suggests that congestion costs the UK an estimated £8 billion per year, at an average of £1,300 per driver.

In a climate where the provision of new road infrastructure is often not practical (for instance because it is too costly, difficult to deliver or undesirable), the management of the existing system becomes more important.

Data collected – what now?

So what is to be done, please? Is the collecting of this data using the Telraam system of any worth?

Kibworth is nearly at breaking point for traffic and should the new town get built then….
