Methodist Matters – Oct 2026

Methodist church

Harvest Festival

This service was held on 27 September. It was attended by children and parents from the Pre-School, who sang a Harvest Song for us. They also helped to decorate the church with a large scarecrow.

Over 200 items were donated for ‘The Well’ Foodbank. We were also able to give £334 to the ‘All We Can’ Relief Charity from the cash collection. This included matching funds from the church reserves.

Wasps

For the first time for many years, we have experienced two separate Wasp Nests during 2026.

Remembrance Sunday

As is our usual practice, we will once again hold a smaller service in our chapel, alongside the main village event at St Wilfrids, for those who prefer a quieter service where they can be guaranteed a seat. It will not commence until after the Procession has passed along School Road en-route to the War Memorial. It will be led by Michael Mays.

Services

This month we have two Family Communion Services (25/10 & 15/11) led by Rev Andy Murphy. With the other services led by Claire Pickering (18/10), Rev Trevor Thomas (1/11) & Kathy Morrison (22/11).

From the Archives

Our present church was built in 1846. In February 1919, approval was given to purchase a new site in the High Street, with land actually purchased later that year between the present Meadowbrook Garage and Roseberry Avenue. The building was never built. The land was sold in 1933 at a profit, but renovations were carried out to the existing building instead in 1928 (re-roofing the schoolroom, new windows in the chapel and the installation of toilets) for a total of £166!

Humour

The minister went visiting. He knocked on a door several times but nobody answered even though he could see the TV on through the window. So, he took one of his cards and wrote on it “Revelation 3.20: Behold I stand at the door and knock! If anyone will open, I will come in.” The next Sunday, a card appeared in the Offering Plate with the message “Genesis 3.10: I heard your voice, and I was naked – so I hid myself.”
