Taking your pet abroad?
26th May 2026 | Health

I am writing to flag an important change to EU pet travel rules that may not yet be widely known and could affect a significant number of UK pet owners travelling to Europe this year.
From April 2026, EU pet passports are no longer valid for Great Britain resident owners travelling to the EU with a dog, cat or ferret.
Under the updated rules, GB residents must now obtain an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) for every trip to the EU.
An AHC must be issued by a UK vet within 10 days of travel and the pet must be microchipped with a valid rabies vaccination. A new certificate is required for each journey.
The official GOV.UK guidance can be found here: gov. uk/taking-your-pet-abroad.
